A ready solution to making sufficient power — and emission-free power at that — is the Wind & Solar Tower, the only generating device in the world that combines two infinitely renewable power sources – wind and sun. These towers are for charging when customers are away from home, and also provide the comfort of lessening range anxiety.

Since they require no connection to the conventional grid, Towers have the added benefit of being able to be placed almost anywhere for public access – along Interstates, in the deserts or mountains, at shopping malls, office building, apartment complexes, at car dealerships or just about anywhere one would take a car or truck.

Wind & Solar Towers employ a vertical axis wind turbine (catches wind from all directions) that has a “frictionless” levitation hub. Topping the airfoil blades is a large rotating circular solar panel that is ultra-efficient because it is self-cleaning, thus eliminating dust, soil and bird droppings to maximize the solar energy reaching the cells.

These two modes of generating emission-free electricity combine for 252 kilowatts and can charge an EV at Level-4 with 380 kilowatts at 1,000 volts, demonstrating that “clean” charging does not have to compromise performance. Not only is the charging fast and powerful, but the owner of a Tower doesn’t pay for electricity, thus eliminating a major cost.

“Only renewable energy can provide for EV charges without stressing the grid and dirtying the air,” Bardia concludes. “Fortunately, ‘clean’ charging is a choice. Sooner or later, emission-free charging will become standard – and the sooner that happens, the better for our grid and our health.”

Adden Energy, Inc., a startup developing innovative solid-state battery systems for use in future electric vehicles (EVs) that would fully charge in minutes, announced the grant of an exclusive technology license by Harvard University’s Office of Technology Development (OTD) and a seed round financing of $5.15M. Primavera Capital Group led Adden Energy’s seed round, with participation by Rhapsody Venture Partners and MassVentures.

The license and the venture funding will enable the startup to scale Harvard’s laboratory prototype toward commercial deployment of a solid-state lithium-metal battery that may provide reliable and fast charging for future EVs to help bring them into the mass market.

Developed by researchers in the lab of Xin Li, PhD, Associate Professor of Materials Science at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), the lab-scale coin-cell prototype has achieved battery charge rates as fast as three minutes with over 10,000 cycles in a lifetime, with results published in Nature and other journals. It also boasts high energy density and a level of material stability that overcomes the safety challenges posed by some other lithium batteries.

Adden Energy was co-founded in 2021 by Li, along with William Fitzhugh, PhD, and Luhan Ye, PhD, both of whom contributed to the development of the technology as graduate students in Li’s Harvard lab. Fred Hu, PhD, founder and Chairman of Primavera Capital, is also a founder of Adden Energy.

The startup aims to scale the battery up to a palm-sized pouch cell, and then upward toward a full-scale vehicle battery in the next three to five years. “If you want to electrify vehicles, a solid-state battery is the way to go,” said Li, who is a scientific advisor to Adden Energy. “We set out to commercialize this technology because we do see our technology as unique compared to other solid-state batteries. We have achieved in the lab 5,000 to 10,000 charge cycles in a battery’s lifetime, compared with 2,000 to 3,000 charging cycles for even the best in class now, and we don’t see any fundamental limit to scaling up our battery technology. That could be a game changer.”

Fitzhugh, CEO of Adden Energy, noted that in 2019, 29% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions were produced by transportation. “Complete electrification of the vehicle fleet is one of the most meaningful steps we can take to fight climate change,” he said. “However, broad adoption of electric vehicles requires batteries that can meet a diverse set of consumer needs. For example, 37% of Americans don’t have garages at home, so at-home overnight charging is not possible. In order to electrify this segment, EVs need to recharge at comparable times to internal combustion vehicles, essentially in the time you’d currently spend at the gas pump.”

The technology developed at Harvard, which includes core innovations in solid-state battery design and electrolyte production methods, may offer other crucial advantages.

“Typically, lithium-metal anodes in other solid-state designs develop dendrites, twig-like growths that can gradually penetrate through the electrolyte to the cathode. We defeat the growth of dendrites before they can cause damage, by novel structural and material designs,” said Ye, who is now CTO of Adden Energy. “As a result, the device can sustain its high performance over a long lifetime. Our recent study shows that this nice feature can also be maintained at scale-up.”

“Climate change is the defining challenge facing the world. It is more important than ever to accelerate the transition to clean energy and zero-emission transportation,” said Hu, who also serves on the Global Board of the Nature Conservancy. “Adden Energy’s mission is to develop cutting-edge battery technologies, thereby enabling mass adoption of electric vehicles and contributing to a greener and more sustainable global economy.”

“Electric vehicles cannot remain a luxury fashion, literally the ‘one percent’ of vehicles on the road, if we are to make progress toward a clean energy future, and the U.S. won’t have a used-car market if EV batteries last only 3 to 5 years,” added Li. “The technology needs to be accessible to everyone. Extending the lifetime of the batteries, as we’re doing here, is an important part of that.”

Sycuan Casino Resort today announced the addition of low-carbon technologies at its iconic casino location in San Diego. The project includes 40 Level 2 chargers, 5 DC fast chargers (DCFC), and a 250 kilowatt (kW)/560 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in progress. This project supports California’s goals of achieving five million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2030 and 250,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2025. Additionally, a project of this size is estimated to deliver approximately 490,000 electric miles, which is equivalent to saving 22,000 gallons of gas each year and thereby avoiding 431,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

This project is just another step the organization has taken in an effort to support a sustainable future. In 2008, Sycuan formed a volunteer group of dedicated team members called The Sycuan Green Team, that leads the charge to educate and promote their mission to reduce, reuse and recycle. Over the years, The Sycuan Green Team has hosted Earth Day events, organized E-Waste collection drives and partnered with local nonprofit I Love a Clean San Diego for several cleanup events throughout the San Diego community. Additionally, Sycuan actively works with a recycling company to divert as much of its waste stream as possible to reduce the impact on the environment.

To complete this project, Sycuan partnered with PowerFlex, a national provider of intelligent onsite clean energy solutions. The EV chargers are integrated into a network that utilizes PowerFlex’s patented Adaptive Load Management (ALM) technology—software that dynamically balances the total system load by controlling the output of individual chargers in real-time to mitigate peak energy spikes. By utilizing ALM, the project can accommodate a greater number of chargers than could otherwise be supported by the existing utility infrastructure. Through this project, Sycuan is helping achieve California’s rapid transition to electric vehicles without overtaxing the grid.

The BESS and EV charging stations are managed and co-optimized by PowerFlex X, software and hardware that provides real-time insights and intelligent control over the onsite energy systems. By integrating the battery energy storage system with the DCFCs, Sycuan can avoid high demand charges from the surge in electricity consumption that fast chargers bring. The BESS can further reduce costs and carbon emissions by powering the chargers with cheaper energy stored in the battery instead of expensive on-peak grid power.

“We are very excited to partner with PowerFlex to provide our guests with additional EV charging options at our casino resort,” said Rob Cinelli, general manager at Sycuan Casino Resort. “As we continue to see more and more people adopt this technology, it was important for us to stay ahead of the curve and provide this free amenity for our guests and team members. We remain committed in finding ways to help reduce our environmental impact and in the future, we have plans to install additional charging stations enterprise-wide.”

“We applaud Sycuan’s continued efforts towards sustainability,” said Steve Morris, Executive Director at I Love A Clean San Diego. “Sycuan’s community support extends beyond their facilities, mobilizing volunteers at cleanup events across the region and by sponsoring this year’s Coastal Cleanup Day.”

“We are proud to work with Sycuan to equip their historic location with technology to make their operations more sustainable,” said Raphael Declercq, CEO of PowerFlex. “The unique ability of our software to co-optimize storage and EV charging will help sustain California’s growing EV charging demand and increase Sycuan’s onsite energy resiliency. They are taking an important step to support the state’s air quality and climate change targets.”

Sycuan Casino Resort began as a humble Bingo Palace in 1983. Now more than 38 years later, it has become a community landmark and one of San Diego’s premier casino and resort destinations. Sycuan’s newly expanded AAA Four Diamond-rated property includes a 12-story hotel tower with over 300 guest rooms and 57 luxury suites. Guests can enjoy a wide range of onsite amenities including a variety of restaurants and bars from fast-casual to fine dining, meeting and event space, a full-service spa, fitness center and a state-of-the-art outdoor pool deck with two pools, a lazy river and swim-up bar. Sycuan also boasts an expansive casino floor with more than 2,300 slot machines and 54 table games in a variety of gaming options. Sycuan is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
