By Aaron Humes, Orange Walk Town: In December, American Sugar Refining/Belize Sugar Industries Limited (ASR/BSI) invited journalists to observe its innovation in dealing with water waste from factory operations.
Today, it further developed its protocols for air emissions control as agreed by the Department of the Environment (DOE).
BSI powers its factory as well as the BELCOGEN plant through bagasse, the leftovers from cane ground in the mill.
However, the process produced particulate matter and gases that polluted the atmosphere.
BSI replaced its electrostatic precipitator (ESP) system with a combination wet and dry system in which the matter is treated with water and sent through separate conductors and the resulting ash is trucked to an approved field, where it can be used with enhanced chemicals as fertilizer. It reduces emissions to near the 350 milligrams per normal cubic meter.
Essentially, the new system reduced allergies in surrounding communities and keeps the air clean.
BSI says it is keeping track of its environmental impact as part of its Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) signed with the Department in 2016.
