A manufacturer of aerosol actuators and valves plans to invest $20 million to expand its operations in Southeast Wisconsin.

Manchester, New Hampshire-based Summit Packaging Systems announced that it will add 77,000 square-feet of space to its Racine, Wisconsin, facility. The project, which is slated to begin in early spring and continue for about a year, is expected to add some 145 new jobs.

Company officials told the Racine Journal Times that the expansion would make the Racine plant its largest in the world, and that the project could be the first of three expansions at the site over the next 10 to 15 years.

“For Summit, Racine has been a wonderful home,” Summit Vice President of Operations Scott Gilroy told the paper. “We’ve been there for over 30 years now, and as you can see, it has been a record of steady growth, and we hope to do the same thing for the next 30 years.”

Summit’s Racine factory is one of eight worldwide; the company’s clients include major local manufacturers SC Johnson and Rust-Oleum.

City officials were expected to begin the process of establishing a developer-funded tax increment district to help finance the expansion. The Racine County Economic Development Corp. said that under the proposed agreement, the city would share new property tax revenue from the site with the company “on a pay-as-you-go basis for a period of 10 years.”

Summit is also reportedly considering launching apprenticeship programs in injection molding and toolmaking with a local technical college.
